What we're up to...

I had the pleasure 2 weekends ago to dive with the Great Lakes Division U.S. Naval Sea Cadets on board the Pride of Michigan, an 81 foot former Yard Patrol Navy vessel. Sponsored and partially crewed by the Noble Odyssey Foundation, this ship and her crew explore the great lakes conducting research on drowned forests, ancient riverbeds and land bridges, invasive species and of course shipwrecks while at the same time teaching the young cadets diving, engineering, mapping/navigation and ways of the Navy. While there are adults on board, the Navy cadets ranging in age from 13-18 run the ship from stem to stern. It's truly amazing to watch these kids in action.

Our first dive was in Lake Huron on an Ancient Forest (drowned forest). 7-10,000 years ago, water lines were literally 100s of feet lower than they are today. Diving on tree stumps in 40+ feet of water where trees shouldn't be is strange I might add.

Our 2nd dive was on the Charles Price. A 600 foot freighter that sank in 1913 during the "Great Storm. The ship lies upside down in abut 75 feet of water. We anchored near the prop and swam along the starboard side then back down the port side and penetrated the wreck towards the stern by entering what appeared to be an engine room window.

Thanks Captain Luke and Lt. Kathy. I look forward to diving with you again soon.

Note: The Pride of Michigan will be anchored the first week of July at the NOAA Pier in Alpena Michigan. Deanna and I plan to be there for gear demonstrations and hopefully some more diving!
If you'd like to join us email for details.
